With tall sides and no roof, an open wagon is loaded from above by grab, crane or conveyor, and tipped out just as easily at the other end. It suits bulk cargo that doesn't mind the weather: coal, ore, scrap metal, timber and aggregate.

Some models are all-steel with a sealed body meant for a rotary tippler; others rely on doors in the sides or the floor to discharge instead.
