Rail Wagons: Tank Wagons
A tank wagon moves bulk liquids and pourable solids inside a cylindrical vessel mounted on an underframe. The fittings depend on what's inside: petrol and light fuels need vapour-tight seals, thick or viscous products need insulation and steam heating just to stay pumpable, and dry powders such as cement load through roof hatches and discharge under compressed air.
Capacity gets quoted in both volume and weight, since most cargoes fill the barrel long before the wagon reaches its axle limit. Fill level is a balancing act too: enough ullage left for the cargo to expand, but not so little product that it surges during the trip.
